What Are The Benefits Of An Adjustable Pillow?

You bought the pillow that was supposed to be the one. It was fine for a week. Now you're folding it in half at 2am, or sleeping on your arm instead, or stacking it on the old one to get an inch more height.

The problem isn't that you keep picking wrong. It's that almost every pillow ships at one fixed height and firmness, decided by someone who has never met you — and once it's wrong, there's nothing you can do but buy another one.

The detail most pillows don't have: an inner zipper

Ours has an inner zipper. You open it and add or remove shredded gel-infused memory foam fill until the height and firmness are right for you.

That's the whole idea, and it's the thing most people don't discover until someone tells them: it's not one pillow, it's a thousand pillows in one. There is no single correct amount of fill. There's only the amount that's right for how you sleep.

How to actually adjust it

Most people never do this, which is a shame, because it takes five minutes.

  1. Sleep on it as shipped for three nights. Give your neck time to settle before you judge it.
  2. Notice which way it's wrong. Chin tucked toward your chest, or a sore shoulder in the morning → too much fill. Head tipping back, or reaching to prop it up → too little.
  3. Open the inner zipper. It's inside the cover, along the seam of the inner liner.
  4. Change it a handful at a time. Most people overcorrect on the first try and end up adding some back.
  5. Redistribute before you re-zip. Work the fill evenly across the pillow with your hands — uneven fill reads as "lumpy" when it's really just bunched.
  6. Give it two more nights. Then adjust again if you need to. Two or three rounds is normal, not a sign you're doing it wrong.

Keep whatever fill you take out. You may want it back later — a firmer mattress usually needs less pillow, a softer one more, so a mattress change can send you back to the zipper.

Where to start, by how you sleep

Loft is mostly a function of the gap between your ear and the mattress. That gap is different for everyone, which is exactly why a fixed pillow is a guess.

  • Stomach sleepers need the least. Your head is already close to the mattress, so too much fill cranks your neck backward. Start by taking fill out.
  • Back sleepers sit in the middle. You want your head level, not pushed forward toward your chest.
  • Side sleepers need the most. There's a gap between your ear and the mattress roughly the width of your shoulder, and the pillow's job is to fill it so your neck stays in line with your spine.
  • Combination sleepers — most of us — should set it for the position you spend the most time in, then take out a little. It's easier to sleep on slightly too little than slightly too much.

Not sure which you are? The sleep quiz walks through it in about a minute.

Why this matters more than it sounds

When people tell us they wake up stiff, the pillow is the first thing we ask about — not because it explains everything, but because it's the one variable you can change tonight, for free, with a zipper.

A fixed pillow gives you exactly one attempt at getting that right. This one lets you keep correcting until it actually fits — and keep correcting later, when your mattress changes or your shoulder does.

Before you return it, please read this

If the pillow feels too firm, too flat, or "not like it was" after a few months, that is not a defect and it does not need replacing. It means it's time to open the zipper.

This is the single most common thing we hear about pillows, and it's fixable in five minutes. If you've adjusted it and it's still not right, tell us — we'll send extra fill. We'd rather solve it than process a return.

What it's made of

Shredded gel-infused memory foam inside a cover of viscose from bamboo — breathable, and it gets softer with every wash instead of stiffer. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which is a real third-party standard you can look up.

Why people stick with it

The pattern that runs through Adjustable Pillow reviews is the same one people describe about the zipper: they'd given up on pillows, then found one they could tune to fit instead of hoping the next box would be the one. You can read the current rating and every review on the product page — it updates as new ones come in.
